Many of us struggle at one point or another in our careers with managing expectations of our managers or maybe even their bosses. This is more commonly referred to as managing-up and involves the application of many skills including communication, conflict management, problem solving, building trust and anticipating needs of others. If we don’t manage up successfully, we often find ourselves dissatisfied in our jobs and often looking for new opportunities.
On September 13, in our Chapter’s first webinar, we will have an opportunity to learn more about key skills that can help each of us manage upwards successfully from Wanda Sturm. She will help us understand why it’s important to help make your manager a “Rock Star” within your organization and how that will benefit your career goals and ambitions. Wanda will also teach us an easy to remember acronym (R-O-C-K-S-T-A-R) for the guide points to effectively manage up:
- Relationship
- Observation of behaviors
- Clarity in communication
- Knowing your manager/supervisor (the how)
- Solutions vs. problems
- Trust
- Anticipation of needs
- Responsibility
Wanda Sturm is a consultant with 30 years of experience across the energy, financial, and high-tech sectors. She has an MBA and holds certificates in change management, coaching, systems thinking, and performance management.
