On June 8th, ISPE’s Educational Programs Committee brought us 2022’s first in-person tour & panel on considerations surrounding make vs buy strategies.
Taking place at ElevateBio’s Basecamp in Waltham, the program started off by highlighting ElevateBio’s cell & gene therapy manufacturing suites to the ISPE participants.
Following the tours, Andrew Sandford, President of ElevateBio BaseCamp, welcomed the guests and turned the panel over to ISPE President Tom Struble, who kicked off the panel portion of the presentation. The panelists covered a range of expertise and included JLL Managing Director of US Life Science Practices, Bob Coughlin, DPS Group’s US Director of New Process Technology, Emily Heffernan, ElevateBio Basecamp COO, Michael Paglia, and Oncorus VP of CMC Operations, Brett Belongia.
Bob started by discussing national real estate trends in the manufacturing sector before Emily dove into the details of anticipating requirements for commercial-scale manufacturing, designing for flexibility, and factors behind deciding the build vs buy strategy. Brett was able to highlight what drove Oncorus’ decisions in building a new facility while Michael described the flexibilities a process development and manufacturing facility such as BaseCamp can provide for biotech companies.
We want to thank our sponsors, CAI, DPS, ICQ, and Masy BioServices, who made this event possible!
With over 85 participants, the entire program was a great success – be sure to keep an eye out for more in-person tours and panels looking forward into 2022!
