There’s on old saying: “Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.” Well, Tom Wilber, co-owner at Barleycorn’s Craft Brew is taking that to heart. Tom left the world of finance to take over Barleycorn’s, a craft brew facility in Natick, MA where people come together to brew their own beer. Tom supplies the ingredients, recipes, know-how and the equipment; the customers bring their friends, a love of beer and a wiliness to learn the process.
The fermentation process dates back centuries to the first know civilizations. The process is not overly complex – a simple mixture of water, malt, hops and yeast – but the resulting beer has a wide range of color, alcohol content and of course flavor. The variety comes from the differences in the base ingredients, the addition of other ingredients and the process steps. At Barleycorn’s you pick your recipe based on the description, obtain your ingredients and follow the steps. Tom and his crew help you along the way and make sure your results are delicious.
A visit to Barleycorn’s is a good way to get started making beer yourself at home, without a large initial investment and depth of knowledge needed to brew a good Ale, Lager or Pilsner. It is also a great way to socialize with friends and have something to share when the work is done. If you are interested home brewing and how beer is made, a trip to Barleycorn’s is a good first step.
To learn more about Barleycorn’s and beer making from Tom, plan to attend the Chapter’s educational program “The Biotechnology of Beer” at Springdale at Jack’s Abby in Framingham on June 21. Or visit Barleycorn’s on-line at www.barleycorn.com to set up a beer making session with Tom and his team.
